Back in 2012, we were working out of a real estate office in Portland’s Pearl District. It was quiet, everyone faced the wall, and the vibe was dead. Honestly, it was pretty rough. So we made a few modest changes just to make the days more bearable: a long community table, some music, and a fridge stocked with sodas (and some beer). Nothing revolutionary.
People started talking to each other, the mood began lifting, and almost overnight the office became a place worth showing up to, not just a place you had to be.
That feeling stuck with us, and we started asking: why couldn’t every office feel like that? We were looking for a creative, inspiring space for entrepreneurs and small teams, and we couldn’t find anything. There were great workspaces at companies like Google, Apple, and Nike, and a few design and ad agencies had figured it out, but nothing existed for free agents, startups, and small teams trying to do serious work. So we decided to build it ourselves.
More than a decade later, we have spaces up and down the West Coast. No two are exactly alike and we’ve never believed in copying and pasting a formula, but they all carry the same spirit: an inspiring workplace where people want to be.
